Clinical Supervisor Practices in Kent, Surrey and Sussex

This practice has been accredited as being suitable for the training of Foundation Year 2 doctors.

This means that the practice and doctors have had to achieve a number of standards which have been assessed by Health Education England working across Kent, Surrey and Sussex (HEE KSS), acting on behalf of the General Medical Council (GMC).

These are some points for your information:

1. Foundation doctors undertake two years of training after completing their medical degree ahead of deciding which career pathway they would like to specialise in (including becoming a GP). All FY2 doctors have met the standards required by the GMC for registration as a doctor in the UK.
2. Foundation doctors are employed by one of the Acute Trusts in your areas and undertake a series of posts during the two years. In each post they have a named Clinical Supervisor who is responsible for supporting them. In GP placements this is one of the doctors at the surgery who has also been approved to undertake this role by HEKSS.
3. The Foundation doctors gain experience in a number of different specialties but are not specifically training to be a GP, although we hope a number of them do want this career. Gaining experience in primary care is however an important aspect of understanding how the NHS works.
4. Sometimes other doctors and NHS professionals are also trained and supported in the practice: this may include student nurses, pharmacists or physicians associates as well as doctors who are training to be GPs. We hope you would support the training of doctors and other NHS professionals.
5. In order for the Foundation doctors to successfully complete their training they need to be assessed on their consulting skills. This is done by the appointed assessors viewing a recording of the registrar’s consultations. You may be asked for your permission to have your consultation recorded in this way. If you agree, you will need to give your written permission and there is a consent form available at the desk, which you will be offered. If the doctor appears to be recording your consultation and you have not signed a consent form, then you should indicate this to him or her immediately. The recording will be used for educational purposes only. Further information about this process and the confidentiality of it, can be obtained from the reception staff.
